Summary Of Pirates Of Barbary By Adrian Tinniswood

YuanYuan Zhou Section 10 Reading Review of Pirates of Barbary The Book is written by Adrian Tinniswood. Before I read the book I think pirates are rude and violent men, after I read the book I think pirates can be romantic and living for pirates can be jolly. There is always piracy on the sea since the days of commerce. Through the history of Europe, especially in the seventeenth century, piracy become a part of European history. The pirates seemed mysterious. Even in this wonderful book, there are not many part describes the pirates, it counties to be mysterious. I think it leaves room for reader’s imagination. The geographical area in which piracy took place was mainly the Mediterranean. Barbary piracy became a very threatening thing. There were many Muslim pirates attacked ships, enslaved crews, plundered cargoes and held numerous captives in their respective areas or countries, but it was done by the Muslims, there were even Christians engaged in this event as well. That time they didn’t have many job to live for. since piracy can get wealth very quickly. It kinds to become a culture alone the Barbary Coast. The violence accompanies with many facts, circumstance, history, ideology, the opportunity to strike. It became their job. Who are the victims? Christians. The Barbary Coast was Islamic. It was like a clash of religion, Islamic versus Christians. For Islamic, they thought pirates to a way of jihadist. However, for Europeans they were tyrannical people who rule the

SWOT Analysis for Ruth Chris-Free-Samples for Students-Myassignment

Question: Complete a SWOT analysis for Ruth's Chris at the time of the case. Answer: Strengths The presence of restaurant in five countries is identified as the main strength. Ruths Chris relished noteworthy landmark after completion of IPO and was able to raise more than USD 154 million in new capital. In 2005, the sales of the restaurant grew to record high of USD $ 415.8 million from 82 locations in U.S. and ten other international places including Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico and Taiwan. Ruths Chris grew to become one of the largest fine dining steak house in U.S. with an unwavering commitment for customer satisfaction. The menu of the restaurant comprises of premium quality lamb chops, fish, chicken, lobster and veal chops (DeMicco 2015). Weakness The limited nature of the franchises owned by other corporations is considered as the main weakness of the company. As per the given case the 51 franchisee owned eateries were owned by only 17 franchisees. Despite of franchisee agreement granting territorial protection and option to develop certain number of restaurant in the territory, it also included termination clauses in case of non-performance. This is considered as a fixed weakness and has a negative impact in the long run. The restaurant never considered diversification model and introducing new products. In addition to this, Ruths Chris never took any initiative for developing new types of restaurants. This is evident with no diversification strategy for the 92 stores. There was limited knowledge for demand in some of the situations, such as in only four international markets the company was aware that the current fine dining steak house model without brand dilution risk (Lee, Hallak and Sardeshmukh 2016). Opportunities The restaurant is having the opportunity to export large quantities of beef to Australia as there is a considerable amount of demand in the country similar to U.S. The restaurant may include high disposable income as this will be able to create appropriate pool of income from a country such as China. The opportunities of the company are further discerned with the product diversification strategy. This can be done by including newer dishes in the menu of the restaurant. The market development model for the country was identified with significant scope of revenue increment into four international markets such as Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico and Taiwan. This may offer lucrative evidence to the would-be value of the franchisees (McAdams and von Massow 2017). Threats The companys infrastructure may suffer from possible accidents. This was evident with destruction caused with kitchen fire in 1976. There is considerable amount of threat to the company in case the business is diversified across China. It is possible that well to do beef eaters may not prefer to go out for eating in countries such as Australia and China. There may be more competitors who are able to provide more diversified nature of the products as per the menu list. This may become a major limiting factor for Ruths Chris. The penetration model may not be able to compete with the fast food services such as McDonalds (Weng, Gotcher and Kuo 2017). References DeMicco, F. J. With its mix of interesting links and social commentary, I always find it surprising that Reddit isn’t on the radar of more content marketers. Free Actionable Bonus: Free Actionable Bonus: Want to create better content for social media? Get the complete guide to building a social media strategy and creating content for social, plus 6 awesome examples to inspire your next post. A Big and Engaged Audience Reddit is a social news website and forum where people share interesting things they find online. The site consists of thousands of communities called subreddits, each with their own specific topic, such as technology, music or politics. And every post submitted has its own discussion thread attached. Reddit is the fourth most-visited website in the U.S. and the ninth most visited in the world. It has around 540 million visitors per month and every visitor views an average of around 10 pages every day. According to Ignite, most Reddit users are American, male and from 25 to 44 years old. But this doesn’t mean you can’t reach all kinds of people from various backgrounds and professions. The Keys to Sharing Content on Reddit Members can submit either links to another website or to their own original content and other members can upvote or downvote each piece of content. The more upvotes a post gets, the higher up it appears on its respective subreddit or the front page of the site. So, here are some tips to get the most out of Reddit. Build Your Karma Score Participation is crucial for building your credibility on Reddit. Reddit’s Karma system gives you a score based on upvotes for your posts and your comments. So reply to comments on your own submissions and comment on posts by others. Users will take you more seriously if your profile has more karma. Add Value Before posting, ask yourself if it’s relevant to the subreddit. Do a quick search to see if it’s already been covered. Provide valuable information on a topic, interesting industry insights or human stories. In-depth posts are more likely to be upvoted than one-liners. Write Long Titles Long, descriptive, compelling titles perform better on Reddit and you have 300 characters to get your point across. Full sentences are fine, whereas click-bait style headlines just won’t work. Be Authentic Although Reddit doesn’t like marketing, it does like authenticity. Quirky is good. Jimmy Hickey, the founder of Oregon-based Findlay Hats, saw the power of Reddit firsthand. When he posted about how excited he was to run into someone in Rome wearing one of his company’s hats, it went viral. Their website received around 60,000 visits and they made $28,000 in sales overnight. So, tell a story. Asking a question on Reddit is a great way to get people involved. For example: â€Å"What’s right and wrong with our new website design?† will give you valuable feedback, encourage more comments and raise your profile. Post Links to Other Interesting Content Don’t just post links to your own blog posts. Link to other useful articles that help your target audience. The community will respect you more. Try Reddit Ads This is one of the safest ways to market your business on Reddit. You can target people based on their subreddit subscriptions, so you can reach niche audiences that are more likely to engage with your brand. Explore the Reddit Opportunity Many marketers fear or ignore Reddit. But if you take the time to get to know the community, it can be a goldmine for content marketing and engagement. In addition, with links being a valuable part of any SEO strategy, Reddit can also help boost your search engine rankings and help you reach even more people. While every link starts out as a do not follow link, popular links with more upvotes are changed into do-follow links, giving your content more visibility online. The bottom line is that if people like your content, they’ll upvote it. If you engage with the community, follow the rules, answer questions and post helpful, entertaining and authentic content, Reddit could supercharge your online presence.

A Journey to Heaven Essay Essays

A Journey to Heaven Essay Essays A Journey to Heaven Essay Essay A Journey to Heaven Essay Essay How much would you like to see your favourite topographic point in the universe? During my senior twelvemonth. my parents came in with astonishing intelligence for me. They had told me I was traveling to a trip to Italy with them. The program was non ab initio with me traveling on the trip. but my small sister was. since she could non help on the trip. I was the lucky brother that had this chance. Most of my concerns were school. but this trip would decidedly pay off the difficult work maintaining up with school. One of the topographic points I wanted to see the most on the whole universe and many other activities came along the manner. Travelling is something everyone should make in their lives. know about different civilizations and alter the day-to-day modus operandi in the day-to-day life. The most deadening portion. as ever. is taking off from Panama to Italy ; since we had to pack up the baggage and being on a plane for 14 hours. The flight was from Panama to New Jersey and a connexion flight from New Jersey to Italy. The experience on plane was all right. though I’ve neer liked planes. since it’s a little topographic point and I like open-large infinites. I am a overactive. I had to hold myself put on a place for 14 hours watching films. which it was non good because my parents had to cover with this and myself. Finally geting at Italy I could already experience the exhilaration and odor of a new topographic point to detect and larn. Arriving to Milan. the state was nil like I expected. Milan brought letdown from me since it was nil like I expected. The hotel was O. K. though. they had to salvage a batch of energy and we had the worst experience remaining on a â€Å"4† stars hotel. The most exciting portion of being in Milan was the nutrient. every repast had something delightful to eat and seek different dishes. I went to the Ophthalmology Milan Congress 2012 with my pa which was truly fun since you could see the inventions on engineering about the oculus. how to bring around more oculus diseases. how to forestall diseases and handle some diseases with no remedy. Apart from the Medicine Congress. the metropolis of Milan did non surprise me ; I think this was the lone topographic point that couldn’t fill in with my expectative from Italy. Many Italians would inquire for our sentiment on Milan. and they have told us that most tourers and even Italians themselves do non see of Milan as one of their me tropoliss since it does non visualize the manner Italy is ; as the old-timer. rustic-old looking topographic point Italy is. with 1000s of old ages of history within Italy. From Milan we took one of the fastest ferry trains in the universe. making up to velocities of 320 kilometers per hours to make to the Monza National Park. where the Italian F1 Grand Prix will be taking topographic point. Bing there has been one of the most exciting events I’ve had on my whole life. the autos. the people. the passion. all united for one same ground ; people that enjoy of the fastest autos in the universe. all the drivers viing to be the best at the paths. Bing at that place as the race starts and listening to the engines howling. the autos driving so fast your ears hurt. and waiting for your driver to be on the first topographic point was a alone experience for me. Unfortunately. my favourite driver had an engine failure and couldn’t race decently and finished the race on last place. though he’s been the universe title-holder for 4 times in a row now. so I’m non upset about it. Fortunately. the Mexican driver Sergio Perez did hold an astonishing race. winning the 2nd topographic point. at the Monza Gran Prix. and my female parent was excited about it since she is Mexican. my female parent who doesn’t enjoys Formula 1 at all. was the most aroused on this race. Been there I noticed the large difference from watching Formula 1 back at place and being on the race. non cognizing where your driver could be. trusting he’s all right and waiting for him to race even faster than the others. it was a batch of emphasis during the race. Completing the haste from all of these events traveling on. we arrived to Rome. which I loved since the 2nd I stepped out of the train. Rome was all and even more I expected from Italy. it has brought me the experience of being. cognizing. and larning from one of my favourite topographic points in the universe. The Coliseum. The hotel from Rome was no different from the one on Milan. though I didn’t affair since I was excited merely of waking up and be ready for the topographic points I would be able to see on Rome. Our first halt clearly had to be the Coliseum and merely standing at that place and being there I could conceive of. odor and experience the action. the heat of conflict. the show. the exhilaration of the biggest eyeglassess of whole clip. I unfeignedly would hold liked to populate on that epoch and be live at the Coliseum. at every event that they had. As good. being at that place at Rome. had brought me to my best culinary experience. the gustatory sensation of fresh. reliable Italian pasta is merely astonishing ; the Italian culinary art is my favourite. My parents. by the other manus. they did non like about anything they ordered at any eating house. they merely hated the thought of eating pasta or pizza all the clip. they wanted to order something flesh outing like a beefburger. One of the yearss in Rome we decided to come across through the Chinese avenue. and stopped by a Chinese eating house flight from the modus operandi of eating Italian nutrient all the clip. For my parents. the Chinese eating house was the best of the whole Italy trip ; though I must acknowledge it was good. but non every bit good as the Italian nutrient at about any eating house we came across. The Trevi Fountain was besides a truly interesting topographic point to see. the architecture and size of the sculpture was merely astonishing. The Pantheon. the temple of the Gods of the Ancient Rome was an interesting piece of history. it’s one of the authoritative edifices on Italy. As good from the most touristic topographic points on Rome. we had the opportunity to see the Capitoline Museum and the Piazza del Campidoglio. built by the greatest life creative person in his life-time and one of the greatest creative persons of all clip. Michelangelo. which was the Godhead of the maestro piece on the communion table wall of the Sistine Chapel. As the Rome touristry ends. we arrive to the Vatican. which district consists of a walled enclave within the metropolis of Rome. Italy. The Vatican City is autonomous city-state. therefore. I was sing the smallest state in the universe. Unfortunately we could merely see one topographic point at the Vatican City. the St. Peter’s Basilica. The art pieces at St. Peter’s Basilica were merely astonishing. every picture was made of little pieces of mosaic tiles. doing this difficult to believe. since the picture seemed so perfect and existent ; the pictures didn’t seem to be possible to be that perfect. As we move farther into the St. Peter’s Basilica we arrive to the Sistine Chapel. which is the most Holy experience I’ve of all time had. I could experience the connexion immediately as I was at the Sistine Chapel ; holding the chance to detect every bit good. the maestro piece of Michelangelo above me painted at the whole rooftop of the Chapel was extraordinary. Such a commiseration holding to go forth this topographic point so fast. though it was wholly deserving it. we had to mobilise rapidly because there was a big sum of people desiring to acquire in every bit good and you couldn’t remain at that place for more than half an hr. â€Å"Undoubtedly the most beautiful metropolis built by man† words by Luigi Barzini at The New York Times. he was talking about the City of Water. Venice. Sincerely. Venice has been the most beautiful metropolis I have seen. every edifice. was a delectation for my eyes. I wouldn’t mind walking the whole metropolis if I had to. since every street had its ain beauty to detect. There was a tall observatory in which you took an lift. about 30 floors above the land. gave us the chance to detect the whole metropolis of Venice from the top. I felt like I was on an belowground metropolis full of H2O where edifices were coming from the above of the metropolis. it was olympian. My male parent had a cousin life at that place at Venice which gave us a truly good circuit on the whole metropolis and took us to the best eating houses of Venice. it’s non a surprise that my parents didn’t like the Italian nutrient every bit much as the Chinese eating house from Rome. For my luck. my uncle had the wont of roll uping old cheese and good national vinos ; so we had a delicious dinner at their topographic point with antipasto. good cheese and vino. My aunt every bit good took us to see one of her favourite topographic points of her childhood which was a truly belowground unknown topographic point for tourers. which was even better than I imagined ; I neer thought that a fish that I didn’t like at all. could be so good. Decidedly this was non my favourite topographic point of Italy. but it is by far a topographic point that I would wish to comeback whenever I have the opportunity. The topographic points I had the opportunity to see within 15 yearss on Italy were merely non plenty. I will hold to come back to Italy to see more and larn more from their civilization because I can’t leave this chapters at Italy by non seen. The greatest pieces of art. the history of 1000s of old ages all united on one topographic point makes Italy one of the top 1 topographic points to see on my list which I would wish to portion with anyone and convert them on holding this experience. Life is short to see the whole universe. and I am thankful I had the opportunity to see this topographic point in my life. make non lose the opportunity of holding this chance if you can hold it. Have a opportunity for yourself. visit and detect your favourite topographic point in the universe. it’s neer excessively late!

Nursing Personal Statement How to Craft a Masterpiece Nursing Personal Statement: How to Craft a Masterpiece If you are thinking about the next step in your academic career, you will appreciate that there is a lot of competition for the high-quality courses. As more and more candidates are seeking tertiary qualifications, it is getting harder and harder to stand out and secure the course place that you aspire to. High marks are no longer enough, and many educational institutions are looking for other ways to better understand which candidates will perform best if admitted into the course. One of these assessment elements is the personal statement. In this article, we will take a look at the type of personal statement that you need to prepare if you are considering applying for a nursing qualification. We’ll give you some examples of how to structure your nursing personal statement, and the kind of things that you should include. What Is a Nursing Personal Statement? This is a short written description about yourself and your experience, explaining to the assessor why you want to study nursing, and why you wish to be accepted by the particular course that you are applying to. This is not a thesis that is pages and pages long. You are probably looking to write somewhere between 500 and 800 words it needs to be succinct, but it also needs to contain enough detail and insights so that it is authentic, engaging, and impactful. What to Include in Your Nursing Personal Statement There are four key areas that you should generally try and include in your nursing personal statement. Explain what attracts you to study nursing. You need to be able to convey why nursing is your passion. For example, you may something like â€Å"The volunteer work in my local care home showed me the positive impact that nurses can have on the lives of patients†¦Ã¢â‚¬ or â€Å"The changing care models in our health system make it a dynamic and evolving career option†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Explain why you have applied to this specific course. You need to demonstrate that you have put some thought and research into the course that you have applied for. For example, you may something like â€Å"My passion is in the mental health sector, and I noted that this course has a very strong reputation in this field.† Explain how your skills and experience have prepared you for this course. You need to show the assessors that you will hit the ground running, that you know what to expect from this course. You may say something like: â€Å"As a diabetic, I have spent a lot of time being cared for highly trained and professional nurses, and it has given me enormous insight into the passion and dedication required for this career.† Test Your Nursing Personal Statement Once you have written your nursing personal statement, make sure that you get someone to proofread it for you to pick up any grammar or typographical errors. You then can ask your friends, family, and professional network to critically read your nursing personal statement. Actively seek their feedback to ensure that your nursing personal statement not only accurately reflects who you are but also that it is authentic, engaging, and has a real impact on someone who is reading it for the first time. If nursing is your passion and your career aspiration, then make sure that you take the time to create a nursing personal statement that will help you secure the course place that you need to achieve your goals.

A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius Essay

A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius - Essay Example Although the book A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius touches upon a lot of serious problems (such as death, misfortune and children that stay without parents), there are critics that do not agree to the fact that Dave Eggers’s writing belongs to creative nonfiction (Forche 109). It is not very difficult to find out if it is so through analyzing the peculiarities of genre and style applied by the writer in A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius. It should be noted that the title of A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius is catching and interesting for the reader. It makes everyone think over its meaning and search for a certain signs that will help to explain why Dave Eggers has chosen this very title for his book. It is not very difficult to note that the title of the book ties into the book’s text. There are two arguments that can help to prove this point of view. The first one is the complexity of the situation described by the author. The protagonist (To ph) loses both mother and father because of illness. Dave is trying to represent two parents in one face for this child. It is practically impossible. One must be a real genius to do this. Dave’s attempts to bring up Toph are frequently heartbreaking. It is difficult for him to play the role of the child’s late parents. ... It is not better than the previous with his father and mother, but the catastrophe (that is death) helps Toph to look at the world from a quite new point of view. As for me, it is very difficult for unsophisticated reader to understand the meaning of the title, especially its symbolic nature. Everything becomes clear only when the reader takes a deeper look into Toph and Eggers’s souls and conduct. In any case, the title chosen by the author of A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius fully coincides with the context of the whole writing (128). Although it may seem unclear at a glance, it is impossible to create more relevant title for this splendid writing. It is not very difficult to figure out the genre of the book. It is sure to be memoir that belongs to creative nonfiction. A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius gives the information about Toph and Dave’s life after the death of Toph’s parents. The book has many extracts where the author portrays magazin e’s history. It was created by Dave and his friends. The extracts with the data about magazine may be considered to be unnecessary in the book, but they are also the sign that the writing belongs to creative nonfiction. A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius consists of four hundred sixteen pages. This volume is normal for short biography. Nevertheless, there are critics that are sure that Dave omitted a lot of important details about the protagonist in his book. According to their point of view it would be better to shorten a number of information about the magazine and write more about Toph’s character, feelings and emotional experience. However, it is known that every reader expects something special to read after seeing the title of

Fossil Fuels Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Fossil Fuels - Assignment Example The first practical use of natural gas was as early as 200 BCE by the Chinese made salt from brine and conveying the natural gas to evaporators through bamboo pipes (EIA, cited in ProCon.org, 2013). After the industrial revolution in 18th century, large scale use of fossil fuels has been reported (â€Å"Why did fossil fuels become so popular†, 2014). Petroleum products are being used as fuel to power transportation such as ships, automobiles and airplanes. Coal is used for electricity generation. The widespread use of fossil fuels harms the environment as these are a major cause of global warming, they cause acid rain, they will end up some day because they are non-renewable, their extraction damages the landscape and they affect the economy due to increase and decrease in their prices (Shepherd, 2002). If we do not start finding and using alternative sources of energy, we will not only end up severely polluting our environment but will also end up with no more fossil fuel reserves left. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources and the geological processes that resulted in their creation took millions of years, meaning that if we run out of them, we will need millions of years to get them back, that too if the environmental conditions are right (Shepherd, 2002). While fossil fuels are being depleted, there is a need to develop alternative sources of energy. Alternative sources of energy such as nuclear power, solar power, wind power, hydro power and geothermal energy are renewable sources. This implies that they are so abundant on earth that they cannot be depleted. These sources of energy do not pollute the environment and thus are better alternatives to fossil fuels (â€Å"Energy Story†, 2012). Nuclear energy makes is the energy derived from atoms. It is based on nuclear fission and fusion reactions. Nuclear power plants are being constructed worldwide and these use uranium as fuel. A very large amount

Pleasantville Point of View Essay Example for Free

Pleasantville Point of View Essay In Pleasantville, the main two characters were David as Bud and Jennifer as Mary Sue. These two teens are from the 1990s and get taken back to the 1950s sitcom â€Å"Pleasantville†. When they are taken back into time, the two teens took back with them modern day ways and alter the universe in â€Å"Pleasantville†. David and Jennifer didn’t try to stir up things for the town intentionally. David wanted to keep things the same so they can go back home and keep things in â€Å"Pleasantville† pleasant. Jennifer wanted to go back home as but as long as he had to stay there. She wasn’t going to do right like her brother want her to. Jennifer felt differently. She felt like they were too boring for her and wanted to shake things up a little bit. She wanted to bring the 1990s into the 1950s and kind of stirred things up. As time was going by and things started to change day by day; some of the older folks didn’t want the change. They wanted things to stay the way they have always been. The dad played as George was your standard dad that went to work every day and came home and expected to have his wife waiting on him hand and feet with dinner cooked. The mother Betty was your typical mother that got the kids up, fixed breakfast, ironed, had dinner cooked, etc. When David alerted the fireman that there was afire but had to say cat. That was when things started to change. The other teenagers wanted to know how he knew about the fire. They wanted to know what was outside of â€Å"Pleasantville† and for once the books had words and they wanted to know more. They were intrigued to learn new things and wanted to know more. They weren’t afraid to venture out amp; absorb new things and experience life. David was a kid that was shy and afraid. He never went for the things he wanted in life. Back at his school in the 1990s he was afraid to ask out this girl he had a crush on. He stood from afar and watched while another guy was talking to his crush and asked her out instead of him asking. He never built up enough courage to talk to her or anyone else. At school he felt very out of place. He was an outsider. When he was in â€Å"Pleasantville†, he felt at home. He knew the storyline and he knew everything was going to be the same way every day and never change. As the movie went on he tried to keep things just as they were but that was hard because his sister kind of stirred it up a little. As time was passing by, he began to wonder why his color never changed while others around him were changing. His time didn’t come so sudden because he still hasn’t figured out why he was taken back into time. He still hasn’t overcome he fear and lived life yet. The turning point was when he was showing compassion for his mother when she was afraid of being seen in color and when he took up for her when the young men were hounding her for being in color and posing nude just because she was different than they were. Once he took up for his mother in the sitcom. He overcame his fear and for once stood up for himself as well as someone else and didn’t back down. Jennifer was that typical 1990s girl that wanted to be kind of rough, hard, bad, and sleep with a guy to get them to want to be with her. That is what she knew because of how her generation was brought up. So when she gets to â€Å"Pleasantville†, she really wants to go back home and go back to her normal life to go on her date. She doesn’t want to listen to her brother and follow his instructions. She just wants to do her own thing. The town is too boring for her. There is no excitement. So when she finally decides to go out with Skip. She decides to be bad and go to lover’s lane and do more than hold hands. Her and Skip continue to do it for a while and she all of a sudden becomes bored with having sex. When Skip came to her window and wanted to have sex with her. She didn’t want to because she was studying. Now that was a shocker. For once in her life she’s more concerned about school work than a guy. She was so proud that she actually finishes reading a book for the first time in her life. That was her turning point in her life. She put her education first instead of trying to get a guy to like her. She set herself apart from the other females in the sitcom that became how they once were vice versa. The overall message is to believe in you and never lose hope. Don’t let anyone or yourself stop you from doing or becoming anything you want to do. David wasn’t shy or afraid anymore and Jennifer for once cared about herself and didn’t think about her old ways for once. With David learning compassion and bravery; he takes that back home when his mother is back early at home and is feeling down. He comforts his mother and I’m pretty sure he will take everything he has learned with him in his everyday life. Jennifer got her life together and wanted to stay a bit longer to continue to work on herself before she came home. She actually thought about college. Jennifer took control of life and didn’t let anyone influence her decision. Everyone just needs a push or a situation to go through to make their behavior change for the good. Like I once stated was that you should never lose hope and believe in yourself. Go for the gold in life and never back down from a challenge.

Pearl Harbor :: essays research papers

Pearl Harbor was the beginning of a war between two countries that would last nearly 4 years and cost hundreds of thousands of lives. The attack was swift and successful for the Japanese and it caught the Americans totally off guard. The â€Å"Day that will live in infamy† drew the United States into a World War in which would change American history forever. The political climate in the pacific area in 1940 was filled with turmoil. The Japanese had extended their empire south through French Indochina and the Japanese Army was invading China, conquering a third of the country. The United States of America was shocked to see this after witnessing Hitler and his Nazi's conquer most of Europe. So, the American's had placed embargoes on their extensive trade with Japan and both countries were negotiating to try to solve their differences. The U.S. tried to negotiate with the Japanese to try to avoid war, trying to convince them that if war broke out between Japan and the United States, Japan, in the long run, would be devastated. So, Secretary of State Cordell Hull and Japanese ambassador Namura and Kiruzo talked on how to solve this crisis. These negotiations proceeded into the summer of 1941.By this time, the Japanese had realized that if they wanted to expand their empire, they would have to fight America and, possibly, her allies. So, they decided to fight. But, in order for Japan to fight America on even terms, they would have to move south, into the East Indies (where there was a lot of raw materials for the Japanese War Machine), which, at that time, were controlled by the western powers: Britain, the Netherlands, Australia, and the United States. But, there was another thorn in Japan's side, the United States Pacific Fleet was moved from San Diego to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This was a knife at Japan's throat. If they decided to move south, then the Americans would attack. So, the Japanese had to come up with a plan to get rid of this threat. They called upon their new Commander in Chief of the Combined Fleet, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. He saw that the British, in 1940, torpedoed the Italian fleet at Toranto using old Fairy Swordfish torpedo bombers. So, Yamamoto thought if the British could use old biplanes to sink three battleships at Toranto, then he could use his modern Nakajima B5N torpedo bombers and Aichi D3A dive bombers to destroy more. Pearl Harbor :: essays research papers Pearl Harbor was the beginning of a war between two countries that would last nearly 4 years and cost hundreds of thousands of lives. “The Other Side of Eden” by Brody

â€Å"The Other Side of Eden is directly based in Brody’s experience when he lived and leaned from Aboriginal Elders. Actually the book touches the question of American Aboriginal cultures and provides new anthropological perspectives to them. The author discusses the Canadian Aboriginal cultures such as Gitxsan, Dunne-za and Inuit. Brody challenges general anthropological assumptions concerning hunter-gathers societies. The book is divided into six chapters headed: language, creation, time, words, gods, and mind. The author tries to counter the idea that Aboriginal hunter-gatherers are not nomadic and provides evidence of their being agricultural culture. It is interesting to notice that Brody’s style of writing is highly figurative and has strong relation to his previous works on the same topic. The book is written from legal transcripts, from field notes and from the memory of the past years. The book is written for academy to honor the memory of lives shared by Brod y. (Brody 2000)It is necessary to mention that in his book the author employs new approach aimed at deconstructing the â€Å"hunter-gatherer trope†. Therefore the author collected and revisited field notes as well as historical documents. The legal transcripts are brought from the ethnographical link. It is known that Brody conducted original researches to find more evidence for the book. Brody calls for recognition respect of â€Å"hunter-gatherer societies† in his book as they preserve their land compared with the â€Å"agriculturalist transformations†. (Brody 2000)While many authors tend to limit the political associations suggested by ancestors of Aboriginal cultures in USA and to maintain the ecological integrity, Brody makes an attempt to overcome those limits. It is apparent that he is not interested in natural ecology, because he strongly deconstructs the myth tat â€Å"indigenous systems that existed before contact were maladaptive to their various env ironments†. He provides the evidence that those Aboriginal cultures are unable to successfully adapt to economic development as well as natural resource development – they wouldn’t understand why and how to use oil and gas, for example.Nevertheless, the book has some negative moments. For example, Brody appeared to be unsuccessful in explaining nomadic and sedentary economic systems. Therefore it is possible to suggest that the author demonstrate a certain limit in his researching and writing from â€Å"outside one's own culture†. (Brody 2000) The author prefers to use the first person in his telling as if he is sitting nearby and leads the original conversation. However, the author is invisible hand in the book and his narrative moves readers further. It is noted that â€Å"the Other Side of Eden† is likely to be work-narrative or travel-narrative of his life and of interfaces with Aboriginal Elders. The author definitely challenges modern ideas and provides evidence that Aboriginal peoples weren’t historically wasters, because according to author â€Å"nothing is wasted†. The author convincingly demonstrates that problems of modern environment don’t result from actions of sedentary â€Å"hunter-gatherers societies†.The reason of those problems is globalization of agriculturalism which is considered nomadic and destructs environmental processes. (Brody 2000) In conclusion it is necessary to provide personal evaluation of the book. It is necessary to note that â€Å"The Other Side of Eden† is a real challenge to anthropological classification of so-called â€Å"hunter-gatherer†. The writing of the author seems authoritative, though Brody is respected by academics. In principle the book is worth for scholars and critics as well as for students and artists.Brody’s evidence provided in the book has strong and weak point. The strength of the boo is that author is not afraid of implem enting new assumptions and ideas and he is ready to counter existed stereotypes, whereas the weak moment is that author appears to be unable to provide proper explanation of some economic systems. Therefore the book undergoes both approval and critique. (Brody 2000) References Brody, H. (2000). The Other Side of Eden: Hunters, Farmers, and the Shaping of the World. Discuss Some of the Challenges Facing International Students in Higher Education Essay

As a growing number of international students who attempt to obtain a further education diploma or expand their horizons, has been increasing, it is often the case that they would face various challenges while studying abroad. The main barrier that they have to overcome is â€Å"academic learning that consists of strangeness, difference and integration (Teekens, 2006:17, cited in Hyland, 2008). According to Hyland et al (2008:29), to improve the quality of higher education not only the individual needs to endeavor, but also the departmental and institutional effort would be indispensable. This essay will illustrate that the main factors of overseas students who study for least one year result in academic learning challenges, are adapting to a new educational system’s assessments and English speaking only environments, then will provide possible solutions, for example, giving sufficient guidance from enrolled universities, revolutionising language certified test in reducing these difficulties. The first main factor that directly causes learning challenges is that overseas students would probably face different methods of assessment. Most postgraduate students wish their overseas journeys were the same as ‘back home’ (Pointon, 2009, cited in The Higher Education Academy, 2012). However, for those students who graduated in other educational systems, team projects, presentations would become the barriers they have to confront. Firstly team-based learning appears to be more strange and complicated to these students because it not only depends upon academic competence, but also has to be relevant to their abilities of communication and coordination. Group work can be even more stressful because a silent student is effectively excluded, whether voluntarily or not. It is also something that many international students have not really encountered before (Sovic,2008). Subsequently, quite a number of overseas students seem to be unfamiliar with presentations as well. According to (Sovic,2008:153), except for necessity of group work sometimes, to express their opinions via presentations international students who may be new have to be confidently confronted with classmates who would hold other cultural perspectives. These unacquainted assessment criterions would widely and considerably affect international students, especially at the beginning of their academic journey. For example, presentations would be often assigned in the first term, if the results seem to be quite low, they not only directly impact those students’ overall score, but also affect their emotions to some degree even might reduce their confidence and motivation with regards to continuing their studies abroad. The second major factor which would be around all overseas students,is the atmosphere of foreign language only. Sovic(2008:150)has demonstrated that for those students who are non-native speakers, even if they have obtained fairly high IELTS(The International English Language Test System)test grades, language is still singled out as the biggest obstacle for them to study abroad. The main reason, which causes that they passed the tests but could not adapt to the new language environment quickly, is that IELTS seems to be irrelevant to the demands within the universities. To begin with, when overseas students arriving the destinations, the first difficulty they have to face is local accent. Research (Sovic, 2008:151) reported that international students who are even native-speakers can still have significant problems with fast and heavy accents in lectures and tutorials. Another point which bothers almost overseas students especially at the beginning of study abroad is acquiring academic language, including discipline-specific vocabulary and academic expression. It is often overlooked, since students who obtained the required language scores always mistakenly believe that it is sufficient to complete their studies (Arkoudis, 2008). These unexpected barriers would be troubled for all overseas students to varying degree. It is notable that international students must spend quite a large amount of time and energy on solving language issues. In other word, they have to cut down the time from learning main curriculums, which would considerably affect them to absorb curriculum knowledge and make them feeling more stress. One feasible solution to help overseas students to face academic challenges is that enrolled universities need to make more efforts before international students’ academic journeys. Despite universities always remind students who have been confirmed acceptance to prepare relevant knowledge about their courses, there are few students who could prepare adequately. Zhai(2004:101)discovered that academic issue tend to be the most difficulty for international students, and there are around 60% students whom recommended that their college should provide more academic guidance. It is suggested that academic support should be provided to international students as soon as possible, since Pedersen (1991) had demonstrated that sufficient guidance should be initiated before they arrive. According to the factors mentioned above, enrolled universities may send an amount of materials to international students via email or even material object, including introduction of new educational system, samples of presentation and team project, videos of lecture and tutorial. Moreover, for students of different disciplines, universities may provide more specific background knowledge or required reading list. Although these will increase universities’ operating costs, it would be effective to help international students overcome academic challenges. Another solution which seems to be quite challenging is revolutionising language certification test. Lee (2009:23) claims that compared to other language certified tests, IELTS is most effective and reliable examination to assess students’ not only language skill but also academic ability. However, although international students obtain the qualified language scores, it does not mean that they can successfully finish academic learning (Schmitt, 2005; Murray and O’Loughlin, 2007; Arkoudis, 2008; Sovie, 2008), even the type of writing in IELTS seems to be â€Å"public non-academic genres† (Moore and Morton, 2005, cited in Hyland et al, 2008). Feast (2002:83) reported that between language proficiency and academic performance at university there is a positive and significant, but weak relationship. Thus, in order to better serve high education, IELTS may be adjusted. Firstly, academic IELTS test could be divided into three categories that consist of Arts aspect, Science and Engineering, Social Science. Secondly, increasing more academic topics in section1 and section2 of listening test could replace a considerable number of life topics. Thirdly, the type of task2 in writing could change to mini-academic essay. These adjustments could not only make the scores more valuable to be referred by universities, but also help and guide international students to accumulate more discipline-specific and academic knowledge which lead to reduce those academic difficulties after they arrive. In conclusion, as this essay has demonstrated, the main factors which lead to academic learning challenges are atmosphere of English speaking only and different educational assessment system. Feasible solution to these challenges including revolutionising language certified test and providing adequate support from enrolled universities. It seems that revolutionizing language certified test is most significant solution to help and guide students at the source. In the future, increased awareness of academic challenges via researching and reporting as a whole could arouse relevant departments’ attention to take action on resolving these problems.

The Power of Monitary Policy on Your Life †Economics Essay

The Power of Monitary Policy on Your Life – Economics Essay Free Online Research Papers What is monetary policy and how does it operate? What are its advantages and disadvantages compared to fiscal policy with reference to the current state of the economy (domestic and global), discuss the kind of monetary policy the reserve bank of Australia should be pursuing. Monetary policy is a powerful force effect on economy, it closed relate to our life. It is all the actions taken by the central bank which involves changes in the base rate of interest influence the rate of the growth of aggregate demand, the money supply and price inflation. This essay will talk about how it operates, and to explain the advantages and disadvantages of monetary policy comparing with fiscal policy. Also will discuss the kind of monetary policy the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) should be pursuing. The process of monetary policy is when monetary policy takes actions to make the interest rate higher or lower by changing the money supply. The central bank can effect investment, net export and consumption in the short term. When central bank buys bonds in the open market, it increases the money supply and the interest rate falls. Conversely the money supply decreases and the interest rate rise. It is called open market operation. Thus, it causes the departure of real GDP from potential GDP between boom and recession period. Furthermore, the central bank uses monetary policy to speed the real GDP return to potential GDP during the recoveries from recessions. Finally, monetary policy also determines the inflation rate, which can affect productivity and the growth of potential GDP in the long run. It has become apparent that economic developments over recent months point to continued good growth of the Australian economy. Major factors contributing to the continually increasing economy include positive investment expectation, and consumer confidence with regard to the consumption of the goods. In addition, the Australian election is likely to further accelerate the expansion of the economy in domestic, which is due to the rising government expenditure in order for the major parties to gain advantages in the election campaign. For instance, according to the statement of monetary policy in August 2004, in the March quarter, the terms of trade was 10 per cent higher than a year earlier, and they are likely to have risen further in the June quarter. Hence, there is a lot of evidences that the real GDP is currently above potential GDP. Monetarists say â€Å"that fiscal policy is less effective than monetary policy or not effective at all†¦. Because of political constraints an d budget cycles, fiscal policy is generally less flexible than monetary policy.† So what are advantages and disadvantages compare to fiscal policy, first of all, monetary policies have much less interferes with the freedom of the market than fiscal policy. It is not interferes particular sectors of the economy. For example, it cuts downs the rate of total spending by using a tight monetary policy. But that tight monetary policy can affect whole economy and it does not just affect a particular sector of the economy. It can let market to decide which expenditures should increase, or not. In recently, the oil price has increased very significantly which hits the history record. It has big impact on the interest rate. The high oil prices force the Reserve Bank to put interest rate on hold at 4.5 per cent in Australia and the high oil price will also slow down the globe economy growth. The oil price example shows us a particular sector that can also affect the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy. Secondly, monetary policy is more flexible than fiscal policy. In Australia because the Reserve Bank Board normally meets eleven times each year, they almost meet every month. That can let them to make decision more often which can help Australia to use better monetary policy to deal with economy changes. But for the fiscal policy is hard to change that because in Australia, fiscal policy is defined as the government’s plans for spending, for taxes and for borrowing to finance the budget deficit. The Federal Government submits a new budget to Parliament each year for the following financial year that is why economists frequently disagree about fiscal policy. For example, the cost of war on Iraq will give big change for government spending and borrowing. So the fiscal policy is not as flexible as monetary policy. Finally, because the central bank is independent it may can act in the best interests of the country. It is insulated from political pressures. Politicians’ can use fiscal or monetary policy to affect the outcome of their election. For example, the government uses economic policy to cause a boom just before election and let the economy slow down right after the election. The both policy can raise the GDP in short term, but not for long term. So it is the best to keep central bank independence. For example, the Australian election on 9th Oct likely to further accelerate the expansion of the economy in Australia, which is due to the rising government expenditure in order for the major parties to gain advantage in the election campaign. There is also a disadvantage for the central bank independence that because those in charge of central bank could say, high inflation is not harmful, or at other extreme. If the economy is in recession during that period the central bank could mak e existing recession worse. Although monetary policy has more advantages than fiscal policy, and it is more powerful then fiscal policy, it can only stabilize short- term economic activity, but can not affect employment and output in the long run. In conclusion, although the Australian economy has been in a boom in recent times, it still could be noticed that the Reserve Bank faces something of a dilemma as it tends towards increasing the interest rates, which results from political implications and concerns of the inflation outlook for 2005. However, based on the sufficient economic data and the rising trajectory of the inflation forecasted by lots of economists, a lift in interest rates in the future could be justified by the recent economic situation. Therefore, in order to adjust the boom and avoid the impacts of the inflation, the RBA should impose its tightened monetary policy in response to the recent economic problems in the society. 5 Tips for Writing a Stellar Vanderbilt Supplement Essay

5 Tips for Writing a Stellar Vanderbilt Supplement Essay SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Vanderbilt is one of the United States’ highest-ranking colleges. With an acceptance rate of just 10 percent, it’s ranked as extremely competitive. It’s no surprise- Vanderbilt is known for having a wealth of appealing programs, including its school of medicine, the Peabody College of Education and Human Development, and Blair School of Music. Because it’s extremely competitive, you’ll need to set yourself apart as a prospective student. That doesn’t mean just your grades and impressive extracurriculars; it also means writing a killer essay to go along with your application. In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about Vanderbilt’s supplemental essay, including some ideal topics, some pitfalls to avoid, and even some analysis of past Vanderbilt essays that have worked. The Vanderbilt Supplement Basics Vanderbilt’s application is fairly straightforward. They accept multiple application formats, including both the Common and Coalition Applications, as well as Questbridge. What application you use is up to you. There are many reasons to choose one or the other, but regardless of which application you pick, you’ll still be answering just one supplemental essay prompt from Vanderbilt. Choose whichever application works best for you. In addition to the essays required for your Common, Coalition, or Questbridge Application, Vanderbilt requires one supplemental essay. There’s only one prompt with a 400-word limit, so you won’t have to choose between prompts. However, having just one prompt means that you’ll need to put a lot of attention into making your essay as good as it can be. You only have one chance to prove yourself in your essay, so make it count! A little latte art never hurts. What Is the Vanderbilt Supplement Essay Prompt? Vanderbilt has just one prompt for their supplemental essay, which must be answered in 400 words or less. Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. The question is straightforward- Vanderbilt is asking you to discuss one of your extracurriculars in depth. This doesn’t just demonstrate to the admissions office that you’re dedicated to your interest, but also that you have passions outside of school. Vanderbilt wants to know that you’ll bring something besides academics to campus, and this is the space to tell them about it. Keep in mind that Vanderbilt isn’t looking for a list of activities or just a short discussion of one of your extracurriculars. They specifically ask for one, but you have 400 words to cover- which means you should spend some time unpacking not just the activity itself, but why you do it and why it matters to you. Be thoughtful; really think about your activities and why you do them beyond that they look good on your college application. Don’t just pick the extracurricular activity that you think Vanderbilt would want to hear about. If you’re a champion Mathlete but you really feel fulfilled when you’re making short films with your friends over the weekend, you should be writing about the short films. If your short film was played at a local film festival but you find more meaning in the time you spend knitting, write about knitting! It’s not about being impressive here. Plenty of other applicants will be discussing their charity work or science team victories. Use this space to discuss yourself, and why the things you do matter to you. If the most impressive thing in your repertoire and the thing that’s most personally meaningful line up, great! But don’t feel like you can only write about things like academic success, leadership roles, or entrepreneurship. Write about what’s meaningful to you and Vanderbilt will see your personality- which is really what they’re looking for- shine through. Reading Vanderbilt essays that worked is like planting a seed for your own success. Vanderbilt Essays That Worked: Analysis Vanderbilt doesn’t use the same prompts from year to year, but that doesn’t mean that looking at past successful essays can’t be useful. Consider this one from an accepted Vanderbilt student: â€Å"Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed,† Maria Montessori once said. School was about letting my curiosity lead me and teaching myself at my own pace. For example, at the start of 7th grade, I was handed the Algebra I book and told to complete it anytime in the next two years. I was intrigued to have a real textbook, but a bit overwhelmed, as the math looked like a foreign language. After reading a chapter, I’d take a stab at the problem set right away. It wasn’t about getting the problems right or wrong; it was about trying to understand the material. As frustrating as this process was, each time I conquered a new idea, my exasperation was transformed into new energy. I learned how to solve problems independently and to know when to ask others for help. ... When I did get to high school, I was surprised at how well prepared I was. My two strongest skills, time management and the ability to work well independently and in groups, mad e the transition easy for me. The Mesa Sands experience shaped me outside the classroom, too. One of my strongest qualities is trustworthiness. Because my school did not have a set structure or rules, I’ve in effect worked under an honor code from the time I was three years old. This essay was written for a different prompt, but the fact that it was successful shows you that it contains features that Vanderbilt likes to see. The writer of this essay discusses their education at a Montessori school, which doesn’t take the same approach to education as many other schools. Throughout, they refer to the school’s teachings and how they shaped their learning, not just but the things they were taught, but the way that they were taught. Not everybody had this same educational experience, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t use some of the same ideas in your own work. The writer draws a clear line between how they were brought up and the person they are now- you could do a similar thing by connecting the person you are with the activity you’ve chosen to write about. What have you learned about yourself because of what you do? The writer is also able to discuss academic strengths without referring to their GPA, which Vanderbilt is no doubt already familiar with. Instead, they discuss their strengths as traits, like adherence to an honor code, trustworthiness, and time management. More importantly, they write about where those traits come from- something you could easily do by referencing the importance of the activity you choose. What’s most important to take away from this essay is the way that the writer connects the experience of attending their unique school to the person they became. No matter what your education was or what activity you choose to write about, you can do a similar thing in your own essay! Don't be afraid of multiple drafts- they make the difference between a good essay and a great one. 5 Key Tips for Writing Your Vanderbilt Essay Vanderbilt is a prestigious school, but there are some essay standards that hold true no matter where you’re applying. Follow these steps to write an essay that’s sure to impress! #1: Start Writing Starting is the step that sounds the easiest, but it’s actually the hardest. No matter what you have to do to start writing, whether it’s freewriting, brainstorming, or just pumping out a first draft as fast as you can, you need to do it. At this point, don’t worry about quality or being impressive. Just get words down on paper so that you can edit them into shape later- if you spend too much time worrying about starting with a perfect beginning, you’ll never make it past that point. #2: Edit Step two is when you can start worrying about quality. Read your essay aloud and see if you can spot problems with word choice and flow. If you’re struggling to read it, change words and add punctuation as necessary. Also think about your overall point. Does it make sense? Are you able to trace your logic all the way through without a problem? If not, find ways to connect your thoughts from beginning to end. Be thorough in cutting extraneous words. 400 words isn’t a lot, and you’ll want to make sure you’re making your essay count by picking vibrant, active verbs and clear language. Don’t worry about being flowery or busting out the thesaurus, but do be sure that your wording doesn’t feel tired or dull. #3: Seek Feedback One of the best ways to find holes in your logic or other issues in your essay is to get others to give you feedback. Find people who want to see you succeed, but preferably not those who aren’t going to give you criticism if you need it. Teachers and other mentors are a good choice, if they’re available. Don’t feel like you have to use every piece of feedback you receive, but do consider all of it. Your essay should always be your own work, so try to rephrase suggestions in your own words or rewrite confusing passages how you would write them, not how others suggest. #4: Take a Break With deadlines looming and other essays to write, it may be tempting to just rush through after getting feedback and fix everything. But take some time away from your essay, focusing on other college application duties or on other things entirely. Anywhere from a couple days to weeks to months can be good for improving your essay, though do leave yourself time to revise.Taking a break lets your mind forget what you’ve already written, so that when you come back to revise you do so with fresh eyes. This way, you can see holes in your logic or places where your language isn’t as tight as it could be. You’ll never be able to completely shed your attachment to your essay, but spending some time away from it can give you a whole new outlook on your work! #5: Revise Now that you’ve had some time away and you have notes to incorporate, it’s time to revise. Revision can be something you do multiple times, combing through your essay for errors and places to strengthen it, but eventually you are going to have to turn it in. Don’t get caught up in perfection- focus on making your essay the best you can. Check it for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors to be sure it’s clean and easy to read, and send it off! The collective cultures value needs of the many over those of the few so the companies have to entrepreneur in such a way that they can assist the general public regarding betterment of living standards, and the individualistic societies are using completely different approach than the abovementioned one (Spear, 2006). There is always room present for bringing innovations and inventions in the market because workforce over there is creative, and they have adequate level of technology at their disposal that they can apply as a means of accomplishing their ambitions (Akhter, 2007). Furthermore, the strategic management values the creativity of employees, and therefore, the entrepreneurial characteristics remain prominent in the organizational setup of the developed nations. The developing nations bring betterment at operational level, and often they import products from developed ones, and develop the model of franchising in order to earn their due share with each deal so the true entrepreneurship that involves innovation and invention is resident of developed nations of America and Europe (Ali, 2010). The literacy rates in developing parts of the world is not remarkable in nature, and because of this reason, professionals are not proficient with reference to their creative powers. The innovation is the defining attribute of entrepreneurships, but the human resources are the

Migration Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Migration - Assignment Example In other instances, migration is as a result of marriage. Married couples often migrate to convenient locations where they can live happily together and state a family. The emerging migration trends indicate that migration can be influenced by gender as well as sexuality. Gender has a strong relation to social, economic and political factors that might influence the movement of people from one place to another. Gender and its related subjects are some of the most discussed issues globally. Many news magazines, articles and newspapers feather gender as an emerging issue which has influenced the lives of people in so many ways (Pojmann.2006. pg. 17). Migration is one of the phenomena attributed to gender. Researchers as well as the media have been working to discover the reasons that link gender to the migration of people. This document is a review of an article on gender and migration by the International Organization for Migration. Gender in this case is described as the differences between the women and men. The differences between the male and the female gender places a great role in the social, cultural and economic status of a particular geographical location. This influences the settlement and migration of people. In 1980s, migration highly focused on economy. Male migrants played major roles in the economy while female migrants were viewed as passive followers. However this has chang ed with the change of time and women are currently playing an equal role as that of men when it comes to economic issues. The battle for supremacy is the factor that brings inequality to both genders. Men are the dominant species in the business market, thus women have found it difficult to contribute to an equal share of the economy as they are suppressed by the fact that men have taken all control of the job market. This factor has made women to migrate form one geographical

Professional Boundaries in Nursing

Professional Boundaries in Nursing The scope of work of Assistant Medical Officer is very clearly governed by the Board of Medical Assistants which was comes under the preview formed under Malaysian Medical Assistant Act (Act 180), AMO takes the oath of Medical Assistant Code of conduct which serves as an ethical guide map to morally binds steer AMO to its rules and responsibilities. It is therefore the responsibility and morale duty of every Assistant Medical Officer to uphold the medical ethics with professionalism and honor. At no other circumstances AMO are allowed to carry out other work outside the specified prescribed boundaries. However in reality AMO in my clinical set up does lots of duties actually falls under the scope of other professional such as doctor, psychology counselor and dietitian. While it feels good that as an AMO, we can perform many works normally done by other professions however it is not without possible legal implications. Boundaries are an imaginary line that separates the duties of a pa rticular professional from the others. Boundary is the ability to know where one ends and where another person begins. Professional boundaries are important because they define the limits and responsibilities of the professional with whom we interact in the workplace. When workplace boundaries are clearly defined, the organization can function more efficiently because redundant work assignments are eliminated.improve this rational it is because health professional have specilised skills and high quality pt care is a collaboration of skills the optimum benefit of the pt outcome. When everyone in an organization is made aware who is responsible for what, healthier workplace environments are created. Crossing borders No professionalism by AMO No collective power Criss crossing of professional boundaries is the norms of today s chores especially working in Haemodialysis Centre .AMO in Haemodialysis Centre especially in my state is working under a great stress. duress and precarious role. Currently, AMo provide care for 000 dialysis care pt over 19 centre through the state requiring close mentoring and care. In Haemodialysis lots of duties specify critical procedures e.g performed by AMO are not legally sanctioned covered under MA act. These porecedures are carried out on the instructions of Renal specialist who by hirechrichal position of power who acts like Kings control the strings where AMO forced to puppet without questions. Being in this precarious position, AMO professional are extremely vulnerable, as if everything goes well, we will get just get condescending a pat at the back, but when something goes wrong support strings are quickly cut and one get ostracized for breach of professional boundaries. Officers nowadays in Haemodilysis centres are not only to ensure that patients comes for three times dialysis treatment, patients gets adequate dialysis treatment but also to carry out mentorship, the staff as a mentor and the patients as the mentee. Through this the Renal doctors expects nurses and AMO to functions as mini-doctors, i.e the mentor are to know the day to day medical conditions, nutritional conditions, medications and blood parameters of their patients. They are expected to know how to make adjustment to tritrate patients medications and dialysis treatment and also to make referral to renal specialist when necessary as there is no. The ironiny is there is no Renal specialist /doctors through the 18 other rural regionla dialysis centres but a total 12 specilaist conviently stationed in urban hospital in the state`s city. Failure of the mentor to make proper mentorship and care of their patients, the mentor will be scolded admonlished by the doctors and if the mentor dis agree question their role with this ruling, they will be asked to leave of the Haemodialysis Centre. Thus a profession dictated by others without voice of empowerment over a long term cannot mature professionally (RRRRR) and it is for this reason that I have chosen this topic to explore and expose the various flaw, the impact and the possible remedy to our health care system. Lain lain u buat sendirilah Nowadays the public or consumers are more knowledgeable, educated and know their rights, medical knowledge can now be easily accessed right at the comforts of their home via internet and as a results any wrong practices will be subject the AMO and nurses to litigations. It is therefore no surprising that patients are more knowledgeable, than the nurses. As a result they have a higher expectation to receive a good quality of health care and thus push the AMO and Nurses to a stressful situation. Although the AMO and Nurses are capable performing the job but with thoughts of professionalism hanging on their heads they feel that patients are not getting the best professional treatment. Though AMO tried everything possible in order to meet the demand of the patient, but sometime patient are not satisfied as they prefer doctors to AMO/Nurses in terms of prescribing medications and blood test and hence AMO and nurses continue to be yelled. (Vondras et al, 2004).These things make the AMO fee l uneasy as at one point they want to be obedient subordinates but at the same time feel that unprofessionalism is practice. And so the AMO/Nurses works about like headless chicken doing their work without much thinking. I feel that Innocent Nurses and AMO are the most vulnerable groups in the medical professions as they can be force by their superior to carry out jobs which is not in their list of jobs descriptions .However in the last line of the list of jobs descriptions, it states that, to carry out orders or instructions as ordered by a higher authority from time to time . I personally feel that this statement has been long abused by higher authorities such as doctors as this controversial statement is deemed to be a license for doctors and higher authorities to compel the nurses and Assistant Medical Officer to carry out clinical or non clinical activities. Somehow the order of carrying out a mini-doctors job which is a vertical substitution with controversial permissions, are reluctantly carried out by the Nurses and AMO because of the unavailability of Renal specialized doctors and moreover if they dont do the job then the patient will suffer and may even cost the patient life. The mentors wh ich is working under stressed however carry out their jobs minus their heart and with frustrations and they may eventually burnt out, Curci, Linda. (2004) Therefore the Associations of Dialysis for Medical Assistant and Nurses (ADMAN) must stand up and issue a strong collective voice to protects the AMO/Nurses from this continuous exploitations. .However the more important questions is, are the nurses or AMO adequately protected from the law when carrying out certain task which may be a risky procedure and may have a medico-legal implications? The Medical Assistant Board has underline codes of Ethics and professional conduct of AMO which must be observed by all Assistant Medical Officer As not all AMO task are specified, I wonder if the ministry of health will go all the way to protect her staff in the case of law suits. The experience faced by AMO and Nurses is therefore akin to force labor. This abuse is therefore professionally wrong as it lays the major platform of destroying the medical support industry. As a protective strategy in the medical profession, doctors have given the nurses low regard therefore making them to have low self esteem towards their profession and assume subordinate perspectives (Fritz, 2008, p. 82) However jobs which are not listed in the main AMO jobs descriptions are Credentialed and privileged. It is therefore important that all terms and conditions of the process of credentialing and privileging must be observed and documented in order to comply the requirement of credentialing and privileging. How To Document on Credentialing and Privileging Applications. Available at : http://www.ashp.org/s_ashp/docs/files/SCSS_HowtoCredPrivdoc.pdf accessed 30 September 2010 . While credentialing is the process of obtaining, verifying and assessing the qualifications of a healthcare practitioner and to provide patient care services privileging is the process used to identify, document, and approve the specific procedures and treatments that may be performed in a specific setting. Privileges are granted based on the findings of the credentialing function and should only be granted for services that are currently offered by the hospital. Available at : http://knol.google.com/k/kathy-matzka/credentialing-and-privileging/3ep8m4hgro5l7/1# accessed 30 September 2010. The noble mission of ministry of health Malaysia is to lead and inspire through excellence in medical device regulatory system., to influence change and forge partnership that ensure public health and safety, to ensure that only high quality, effective and safe medical devices are available in Malaysia, to encourage and support the innovation and development of technology in medical device industry.( Medical Device Bureau Ministry of Health, Malaysia ). And in Nursing, professional boundaries simply means to establish the immediate legislations and requirements that differentiate the nurses and doctors scope of works (Ruth Constance ,2008, p. 39). Nursing profession is born out of ethics and desire to ensure that high levels of purity and integrity of life is observed (Barbara Lynn, 2008, p. 109). When there is lack of clear definition of specific boundaries in terms of specialization, the doctors are considered to have more impact in treatment of the patients than the nurses (Anne, 2008, p. 277). Nurses are not allowed to challenge any of the surgeons decisions but just to follow instructions as the surgeons finish the patients operations within short periods and then leave the nurses to carry out nursing care of the patient (Fritz, 2008, p. 82). Besides being a clear generalization, assumption, deliberate or unintentional underrating of the nurses profession, it is a clear indicator of torn delineations that lacks clear outlining for harmonious operations (Bessie Huston, 2008, pp. 752-753).Nurses are therefore required to assume their major activities when they are away irrespective of the main reason (Ruth Constance, 2008, p. 40). With lack of proper institution for defining the boundaries, the nurses are consumed in their calm built nature of service towards humanity (Colyer, 2004, pp. 408-104) .Using strong legislative framework and policy guidelines, nursing should be guarded like other professions and define the required relationship with the doctors in their areas of work (Bridgit, 2008, p. 569). When there is a criss crossings violations by doctor intrusions they allow do but wont empower you. Surface icing doctors may need AMO/Nurses helps but in reality they dont allow the AMO/Nurses to practice outside making the AMO/Nurses only the tool of convenience .However If everybody wants their own border of practice, everything have to wait for the doctors thereby causing a mark increase of public complaints. Therefore care should now be multi-taskings and coordinating care . Why I do cross boundaries, I do for the following reasons :- Because I am facing the patients If I dont do the public will complaints Critical to do patient will do Sometimes expatriate doctor with questionable qualifications patients may die but if my mother or relatives I want them to do it correctly. What happen if I do then Patient recovered really well I will save reputations of the my hospital Pat on the back from the doctor however it not done openly However patient will not be happy . But what happen if there is a complications when I do it then I will be Trying to be smart Trying to be a doctor Model for crossings borders Counsellings deepressed patients suicidal Anne, M. The play A View from the Bridge is set in the 1940’s in a place called Red Hook in America. Arthur Miller is the writer of this play ‘A View from the Bridge’ The play ‘A View from the Bridge’ is set in the 1940’s in a place called Red Hook in America. Arthur Miller is the writer of this play and he has been quoted as saying that this play is based on a lot of his own personal experiences. The culture of Red Hook is a mixture of the newly formed American culture and the Sicilian culture, which has come through immigrants being brought here from Sicily. The main characters in the play are Eddie Carbone, who is a long shoreman, his wife Beatrice, their niece Catherine who is adopted, and there are Beatrice’s two cousins, called Marco and Rodolfo, who are illegal immigrants from Sicily, looking for work in America. Beatrice and Eddie are both American citizens, and were born in America, but their grandparents were from Sicily. Catherine has been raised and brought up by Beatrice and Eddie since she was a young child and Eddie has grown attached to her and is very protective of her due to his incestuous attraction to her. Alfieri is a lawyer from an Italian American background and has lived in Red Hook since he was 25. Alfieri has a dual role in the play. He speaks directly to the audience and he reminds the audience of things that have happened in the play, plus he is also a character involved in the action of the play. Alfieri introduces the themes that run through the play. In Alfieri’s opening speech he uses the words â€Å"watched it run its bloody course† as if he knows something bad is going to take place in the play, a tragedy. Alfieri also points out that there is a difference between the modern American law and the ancient law of the Sicilian justice because â€Å"the law has not been a good idea since the Greeks were beaten† and the â€Å"justice is very important here†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ these quotes are showing how the people are connected to Sicilians from their past. It is important for Alfieri to be a character as well as the narrator in the play because as the narrator he comes in to speak directly to the audience and keep us interested in what is happening. As a character in the play, he is important because he talks to Eddie and tries to help him, because he understands him. He gives the audience insights into Eddie’s character. Class Inequality and Poverty as seen by Marx, Weber, and Lewis Essay

Our society today is currently experiencing a widening of the gap between the rich and the poor. As the saying goes, â€Å"the rich is getting richer and the poor is getting poorer,† our society attests to such truth, where the wealthy is gaining more money while the poor’s case is getting worse by the minute. Poverty is a big problem ever since the dawn of man. In an ideal world, the number of resources produced could feed more than any of the hungry mouths all over the world. But in reality, wealth is not distributed properly to every living individual. There are those who get more as compared to those who get less or get nothing at all. The sad reality If you take into consideration every living individual in a certain community, only a small fraction of its population enjoy living a well-off life, and a majority suffer from lack of resources or doesn’t have enough to fill their stomachs. A fraction of imbalance in the distribution of resources and wealth affects a greater number of people, wherein the sad reality lies on whom are the ones getting much and who are the ones gaining a lot. This is the sad reality in our society, where people thrive in a world filled with inequality and sadly, majority of the people suffer from the extra gains of some people. Class inequality can be traced way back in the history of men, when people learned to classify themselves, making some superior and some, well, rather inferior. Another sad reality is that the ones who are in the higher echelons of the society are the ones who are not doing actual hard labor. These people are the one’s capitalizing from the hard work of the poor working class, sweating their lungs out, literally giving their sweat and blood just to make money. This labor force is the one who is actually earning the money; it is their effort and strength that makes the real cash, not the ones bossing them around. But the harshness of life is reflected in this situation: the ones working hard gets paid less, barely enough to make a living out of it, while the ones bossing everyone around gets a much bigger share, wherein they have exerted minimal or no real effort in doing so. This is the present situation of the working class of the past, the present, and maybe of the future. There are some great thinkers who have pondered on these things so to speak. This people, though separated by different views, expressed their opinions about how inequalities in the classes happen and why poverty exists, depending on how they see the situation. Their take on the realities are reciprocated by approval or by rejection from the people looking at their ideas. Some may seem radical to others, but some deem that is the necessary thought for that certain specific topic. These great thinkers include Karl Marx, Max Weber and Oscar Lewis. Karl Marx’ views For Karl Marx, poverty is the outcome of the rampant class inequality that the society is suffering today. The working class, whom Karl Marx advocates, is the ones who are actually earning the money for the society. They are the ones who actually deserve to get much of the gains, rather those who are capitalizing from their labor. Marx stressed that capitalists are the ones bringing disarray in the society because they are actually contributing lesser work as compared to the laborers, yet they are getting most of the gains. In order to correct this, Marx strongly advocated the abolishing of capitalism and replaces it with communism. For him, it could be a way to alleviate poverty in the society today, rather than just letting the capitalists sit around and wait for the harvest of their money’s fruit, rather than giving the laborers the real fruits of their labors. In Marx’ belief, capitalism has been the root of the great class divide, the widening gap between different social strata, where the poor and the rich are distinctively apart from each other. This is because of the fact that a great part of the gains goes to the pockets and the bellies of the capitalists, who are theoretically â€Å"getting even richer,† the fact that they are the ones who have the money. On the other hand, the laborers, the ones who are exerting greater effort as compared to these capitalists, are not getting anywhere the definition of rich at all, hence, they are having the difficulty to cope with the increasing cost of living, thus worsening their status, with them experiencing the â€Å"poor is getting poorer† part (Hallas, 2002). Looking closely at Marx’ ideas, you could see that it could also be about freedom. It is being able to freely produce and receive what is rightfully yours, as for the part of the laborers, for their efforts, their hard work to be reciprocated with enough pay. It is about how the true â€Å"money-earners† – the laborers, be able to control various circumstances that could benefit them, and not the capitalists. They will be able to create a free society where their hard work will be equal to a good life for them and their families. Because of this, the society will be a better place as conceived by Marx. It will be an exploitation-free society, in the same time it will do away with oppression, racism, unemployment, war, from poverty and inequality. Max Weber’s views Max Weber’s idea revolved on the role of an authority when it comes to the distribution and allocation of the national resources. He also stressed out that the wealth of the country, the nation’s riches, came from the bureaucratic organizations present. They are clearly the ones influencing the allocation of these resources because as Weber sees it, they were the producers, not the common working class. His main idea stated that bureaucracy, an organizational arrangement of the people themselves, is to administration as compared to machine which is for production. Weber defines bureaucracy as an institutional method wherein the rules are applied to certain specific cases, thus justifying the government’s action as being fair and really predictable (â€Å"What Is Bureaucracy?† 2004). For Weber, poverty was not essentially a natural situation or condition. The situation of poverty could be broken, wherein the social status of the people could be alleviated from the poor to the not-so-poor, thus implying a chance for people to develop. But if you see the definition of poverty as being relative, there could still be people thriving below the poverty line. This is because of the margin of difference from the rich and the poor are also changing. But if you look closely, their way of life, their social standings, their lifestyles had been changed. Even though they are still considered to be poor, relative to the rich people, they are able to alleviate their way of life out of the slums and were able to live a normal and healthy lifestyle. Oscar Lewis’ views American born anthropologist Oscar Lewis created the social theory about the â€Å"culture of poverty.† This concept of social classifications justify the positioning of the poor in the society, wherein the concept explains that the poor people have a different value system. Because of this, the theory suggests that the poor are slumped in the situation of poverty because they are continually adapting from the burdens of poverty. For Lewis, the poor became â€Å"the poor† because they were transformed by poverty. Poverty became a standard in classifying a person’s social status, thus implying that the definition of being poor is relative. It depends on how you look at it. Being poor doesn’t necessarily mean that you are not eating well, not being able to enjoy life as much as others can, etc. etc. Being poor entail being placed in the lower part of the poverty line. If there are a lot of rich people, the poverty line could be changed, thus some of the rich people may be considered as poor (Burt, 2004). American situation The most applicable principle in the United States of America was the contribution of Oscar Lewis. The quality of life in America is far better than other countries in the world, yet there are still some poor people. This is relative to America’s situation as compared to the situation of another country. There is a possibility that a rich person in another country, when he goes to America, he will be considered poor. Another possibility could be that when a poor man in America goes to another country, he could be considered as rich. Lewis’ introduction of a culture of poverty could be applied in America’s situation, wherein the concept of the poor is just a creation of the concept of poverty. Creating an underclass could have resulted to the introduction of a higher class, thus there was a basis for comparison of the different classes that exist in a society. The poor existed because of the rich people’s existence and vice versa. Burt, D. S. (2004). Oscar Lewis. Retrieved February 21, 2007, from http://www.answers.com/topic/lewis-oscar Hallas, D. (2002).
